Testing Fishland: A Quirky Display Font for Modern Web Design

I was working on a redesign for a boutique online store selling handmade toys and children’s books. The goal was to create a warm, inviting brand identity that felt playful yet professional. As I started exploring typography options, I came across Fishland, a thick lettered, friendly, and quirky display font that immediately caught my eye.

The first thing I noticed about Fishland is its bold, rounded characters with a slight slant that gives it a whimsical feel. It reminded me of the kind of fonts you’d see in a cartoon title or a children’s book cover. This made it a perfect fit for the project since the brand wanted to appeal to parents while still feeling fun and approachable for kids.

I decided to test Fishland in the hero section of the homepage. Placing it over a bright, colorful image of a toy train, the font stood out without overwhelming the visual. The thickness of the letters helped it remain legible even from a distance, which is crucial for large headers on mobile screens.

One of the key considerations when choosing a display font is how it affects readability. Fishland isn’t meant for long blocks of text, but it works beautifully for short phrases like headlines, call-to-action buttons, and promotional banners. For body copy, I paired it with a clean sans serif font to ensure the content remained easy to scan and digest.

On the product landing pages, I used Fishland for section headings such as “Handcrafted with Love” and “Explore Our Collection.” These titles drew attention without being too distracting. I also experimented with using it in the logo design, where its friendly personality helped reinforce the brand’s playful tone.

When testing responsive layouts, I made sure to check how Fishland rendered on smaller screens. While the font’s character shapes are chunky, they didn’t break the layout or become too cramped. Adjusting the line height and spacing helped maintain a balanced look across devices.

For the checkout and contact sections, I kept things more minimal, using a simple sans serif font for form labels and instructions. This contrast helped Fishland shine in the main headline areas without making the overall design feel cluttered.

Another aspect I considered was font pairing. Fishland’s playful nature worked well with a modern sans serif font like Montserrat or Roboto for body text. This combination provided a good balance between creativity and clarity, which is essential for user engagement and brand trust.

I also checked the font’s availability as a webfont, ensuring it loaded quickly and performed well on different platforms. Fishland offered multiple weights and alternates, giving me flexibility in how I used it throughout the site. The commercial licensing made it a solid choice for an online store that needed consistent branding across all digital assets.

In the blog section, Fishland was used sparingly for post titles and featured headlines. Its quirky style added a touch of personality without detracting from the editorial feel of the content. I found that it worked especially well for posts related to creative parenting, DIY projects, and children’s literature.

For marketing campaigns, I used Fishland in promotional banners and social media graphics. The font’s unique style helped stand out against bright backgrounds and images, making it ideal for quick visual impact. I made sure to keep the text short and punchy to maintain readability and avoid any potential issues with small screen sizes.

Overall, Fishland proved to be a versatile display font that added character to the website without compromising usability. It helped reinforce the brand’s playful identity while maintaining a professional feel through thoughtful typography choices and font pairing.

If you're designing for a brand that needs a touch of creativity without losing clarity, Fishland could be a great option to consider. Just remember to use it strategically—where it adds value, not where it distracts. Pair it with simpler fonts for body text, and always test it across devices to ensure a polished online experience.
